Hong Kong Restaurant Reservations: Booking Guide 2024

Hong Kong restaurants ranked among the city's best now demand bookings up to six weeks ahead with set menus starting at HK$980 per person at many Central venues.

The surge follows the full return of mainland visitors this spring and a 12 percent rise in imported ingredient costs tracked by the Hong Kong Restaurant Association through June. Diners who once walked into Wan Chai spots on short notice now compete with corporate cards and tour groups for tables.

Two addresses illustrate the shift. Lung King Heen inside the Four Seasons Hotel on Finance Street requires confirmed reservations by phone or its website portal, while The Chairman on Kau U Fong in Sheung Wan limits walk-ins to its bar counter only after 9pm on weekdays. Both kitchens source from the same Aberdeen wet market suppliers each dawn.

Association data released last month showed the average à la carte bill at establishments with at least one Michelin star reached HK$1,150 per head in the second quarter, up from HK$920 the previous year. Tasting menus at the same tier now list between HK$1,680 and HK$2,450, excluding wine pairings that add another HK$680 minimum.

Securing a table

Most kitchens open online booking systems at midnight thirty days ahead. Phone lines at Lung King Heen open at 10am but fill within forty minutes on weekdays. The Chairman accepts email requests through its site yet replies only to confirmed guests, a policy introduced in April to cut no-shows. Hotel concierges at properties near IFC Mall still hold limited allocations for in-house guests, though these slots vanish by mid-morning during peak summer months.

Budgeting before arrival

Factor in the 10 percent service charge and any corkage fees of HK$300 per bottle when bringing outside wine. Credit cards are accepted everywhere listed here, yet some smaller operations in Sheung Wan add a 2 percent surcharge for foreign cards. Public transport via MTR to Central or Sheung Wan exits keeps costs under HK$20 from most districts, while taxis from Causeway Bay run HK$65 to HK$85 depending on traffic after 8pm.

Check each restaurant's website the evening before for last-minute cancellations or tasting-menu substitutions announced due to seasonal supply changes. Arrive five minutes early for assigned seating times, and confirm dietary restrictions directly with the reservations desk rather than at the door.
