Free tai chi classes and guided hikes on the Dragon's Back trail begin this weekend as part of July community programs run by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
July brings longer daylight hours and steady demand for outdoor activity in a city where office workers often log more than nine hours daily at desks. Public health data from the Department of Health shows adult participation in regular exercise rose 12 percent between 2023 and 2025, yet many still cite cost and access as barriers. Organisers timed the current slate of events to fill weekday evenings and weekend mornings when humidity drops below 80 percent.
Groups meet at the Shek O Road trailhead every Saturday at 7:30 a.m. for the Dragon's Back loop, with volunteer leaders from the Hong Kong Hiking Association providing route briefings before the 8.2-kilometre walk. On Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:45 a.m., instructors lead free tai chi sessions on the lawn near the Bandstand in Victoria Park, Causeway Bay, drawing crowds that spill onto the adjacent footpaths along Causeway Road. Both locations sit within 400 metres of MTR exits, removing transport costs for participants.
The MacLehose Trail segment between Tai Mo Shan and Lead Mine Pass hosts a free 12-kilometre group walk on 18 July, limited to 180 spots that fill through the LCSD online portal. Last July the same program recorded 4,872 total attendances across 22 sessions, with zero entry fees and water stations supplied at each checkpoint. Department of Health clinics in Wan Chai and Sham Shui Po distribute printed schedules and offer basic fitness assessments on the same days as the events.
Sign-up opens 48 hours before each session through the LCSD mobile app or at the information desk inside Victoria Park's indoor games hall. Participants need only bring a reusable bottle and wear closed shoes; no registration fee applies and spaces are released on a first-come basis for those who arrive 15 minutes early.
