Central Hong Kong: Finance, Culture & the Best Places to Visit
Central is Hong Kong's financial and cultural heartland — a vertical forest of glass towers where billion-dollar deals are made by day and rooftop cocktail bars buzz until late at night. As the oldest commercial district in Hong Kong, Central layers colonial heritage, world-class dining, and cutting-edge architecture into one of Asia's most dynamic urban environments. The historic HSBC Building, the elevated Mid-Levels Escalator, and the revitalised PMQ creative market are all within walking distance of each other.
The Central-Mid-Levels Escalator — the world's longest covered outdoor escalator — connects the waterfront to the hillside neighbourhoods of SoHo and Sheung Wan, and the streets on either side are packed with independent boutiques, art galleries, and excellent restaurants. Graham Street Market, one of Hong Kong's oldest wet markets, runs perpendicular to the escalator and offers an atmospheric glimpse of local life among the imported fashion boutiques. The nearby PMQ complex in a converted police quarters hosts Hong Kong's best selection of local designers and creative studios.
For drinking and dining, Central's LKF (Lan Kwai Fong) remains the city's most celebrated nightlife zone, while SoHo's Hollywood Road is home to antique galleries, Michelin-starred restaurants, and terrace bars. The IFC Mall on the waterfront connects via footbridge to the Star Ferry Pier, making Central the ideal starting point for a day exploring Hong Kong Island. MTR Central station is the main hub for the district.
