Hong Kong Art Scene Guide: Art Basel, M+, and the Gallery District
Hong Kong has transformed into one of Asia's most significant art market centres over the past decade — a transformation driven by Art Basel Hong Kong (which elevated the city to the status of one of the world's three primary art fair locations alongside Basel and Miami), the opening of the M+ Museum of Visual Culture in 2021 (the largest contemporary art museum in Asia), and the critical mass of international galleries that have established permanent presences in the city.
M+ in the West Kowloon Cultural District is the centrepiece — a Herzog & de Meuron-designed building of extraordinary ambition housing 33,000 works of 20th and 21st-century visual art, design, architecture, and moving image from Asia and beyond. The permanent collection's strength in Hong Kong and Chinese art of the 20th century is unparalleled, while the temporary exhibitions programme brings major international shows to a building whose design quality justifies a visit even without the art inside.
The gallery district in Central and Sheung Wan has concentrated around the Hollywood Road corridor and the Pedder Building, where white-cube spaces from Gagosian, White Cube, Hauser & Wirth, Pace, and numerous Asian galleries occupy multiple floors. Galerie Perrotin and Lehmann Maupin have established significant Hong Kong presences. Art Basel Hong Kong in March draws the global art market to the convention centre for three days of commercial programming, with concurrent exhibitions and events throughout the city. The Hong Kong Museum of Art on the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront has an excellent permanent collection of Chinese ceramics, calligraphy, and painting.
