Lantau Island Hong Kong: Big Buddha, Tai O & Hiking Guide
Lantau Island is Hong Kong's largest island and one of its most rewarding day destinations — a place of genuine rural character, ancient fishing villages, remote monasteries, and outstanding hiking trails that coexists with Hong Kong International Airport and Disneyland on its northern shore. The southern and inner portions of Lantau offer an escape from urban Hong Kong into something that feels entirely different from the city just 30 minutes away by ferry or MTR.
The Tian Tan Buddha (Big Buddha) at Ngong Ping is the island's most famous attraction — a 34-metre bronze seated Buddha completed in 1993 that sits on a lotus throne above the Po Lin Monastery, accessible by cable car (Ngong Ping 360, with spectacular views over the airport, harbour, and surrounding peaks) or a demanding hiking trail from Tung Chung. The adjacent monastery serves excellent vegetarian lunch that is both affordable and genuinely good. Arrive before 10am to beat tour groups.
Tai O, on the island's western tip, is Hong Kong's most atmospheric traditional fishing village — a community of stilt houses over tidal channels where a small population still practices traditional fishing and shrimp paste production. The painted stilt houses connected by footbridges, the preserved clan houses, and the small temple complex create one of the most evocative traditional landscapes in South China. Boat tours from Tai O's pier offer close encounters with the rare Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins that inhabit the western waters. The Lantau Trail (70km, typically done in sections) offers some of Hong Kong's finest hiking with consistent ridge views.
