Hong Kong Harbour & Star Ferry: The Iconic Crossing & Victoria Harbour Guide
Few experiences in the world match the simple pleasure of crossing Victoria Harbour on the Star Ferry. Since 1888, the green-and-white double-deck ferries have connected Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, offering one of the world's most spectacular short sea crossings — with the dramatic skyline of Central and Wan Chai rising on one side and the dense urban peaks of Kowloon on the other. The fare is just a few Hong Kong dollars, making it one of the great travel bargains on earth.
The Tsim Sha Tsui Ferry Pier on the Kowloon side is directly adjacent to the Avenue of Stars promenade, where bronze statues of Hong Kong film legends line the waterfront and the nightly Symphony of Lights laser show illuminates the harbour from 8pm every evening. The promenade stretches west toward the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and the iconic Clock Tower, the last surviving remnant of the old Kowloon-Canton Railway station. The views of Hong Kong Island's skyline from this promenade are widely considered among the most spectacular urban panoramas on Earth.
The Star Ferry operates two routes: Central–Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai–Tsim Sha Tsui, both running from approximately 6:30am to 11:30pm. Upper deck tickets offer better views and cost a trivial premium over lower deck. Beyond its tourist appeal, the Star Ferry remains a working commuter service used daily by tens of thousands of Hong Kongers — riding it is both a practical transport option and an essential slice of Hong Kong life that no visitor should miss.
