District councils in Hong Kong launched additional free fitness classes for seniors on 1 July 2026 at multiple public sites.
The move addresses rising demand from an ageing population where one in three residents will be over 65 by 2036 according to Census and Statistics Department projections. Group exercise reduces isolation and supports mobility when held regularly in familiar neighbourhoods.
Leisure and Cultural Services Department staff now run daily Tai Chi sessions at Victoria Park in Causeway Bay starting at 7am each weekday. Participants meet near the central fountain for 45-minute routines led by certified instructors. In Tsim Sha Tsui the same department offers chair-based strength training every Tuesday and Thursday at 9am inside Kowloon Park's indoor hall.
Further east the council in Eastern District added guided walks along the Dragon's Back trail starting from the Shek O road car park on alternate Saturdays. Walks cover 3km sections at a steady pace with rest stops and water provided at no charge.
Department of Health figures show 62,400 seniors attended LCSD group fitness sessions in the first half of 2025. That total marked a 12 percent increase from the same period two years earlier. All sessions remain open to anyone aged 60 or above who presents a Hong Kong identity card at the venue.
Residents can check daily schedules on the LCSD website or visit any district council office on Hennessy Road or Nathan Road to sign up in person. Morning park sessions require no advance booking while trail walks ask for a simple phone call two days ahead to confirm numbers.
